Top ten lists are always fun, if not funny. Fox Business News recently published a list of the top 11 worst places to work in corporate America. (Shades of Spinal Tap.) Most of the companies earned negative reviews from its employees because of poor management. This led employees to complain of their own poor treatment, as well as bad customer relations. Under market pay also contributed to the bad ratings. Finally, several of the companies, including Hewlett Packard and Sears Holding, have been shedding employees, and will continue to do so.
Although individual employees polled for this survey probably had specific supervisors in mind, the combined results of the rating and comment show the detriment of a top down management structure focused on numbers, and short on flexibility.
The best places to work tell a different story. Sample quotes from the top rated companies contain themes of cameraderie, good pay, and advancement. Some are just cool places, such as Google, Facebook, and Apple. The takeaway from both surveys: people want to be valued for their contributions, and not have to lie to customers.
